• Majic Quest photographed at the Spot-O-Faith Farm and Equine Rescue. This two year old Appaloosa filly was rescued from a 93 year old breeder that was no longer to care for her. The damage to her legs was caused when she was caught in a barbed wire fence (about a month before being brought to the rescue) and was left to heal on her own. She will be rehabilitated then available for adoption. Equine photography by Michael Kloth.

• Infrared (IR) image - This is another photograph made at Firefly Farm. I like this as an infrared image but because of the flag, I sometimes wonder if I'd like it better as a faded color image. Either way, it has a nice rural Americana feel that I really like.

• Infrared (IR) image - This is a scene photographed off of a rural Kentucky road not far from my house in Lexington. This processing technique is used with some frequency by photographers on color digital IR images because the blue sky makes it look a bit closer to reality as we see it yet the foliage makes it clear that it is not a standard color photograph. The image started with the regular brown/blue combination from the camera but the blue and red channels were inverted in Photoshop.

I like the look of this image but I don't use this treatment often because I feel it can quickly start to feel gimmicky.

• Infrared (IR) image - View from the Catalina Highway. This image was made around 6000 feet (above sea level). I like the dead branch in the foreground because it provides a visual anchor for the image. I also like the vibrant blue color of the foliage.

• Infrared (IR) image - Pima County Courthouse. This historical building is striking in infrared and in color.

• From time to time I would photograph the adoptable animals on different colored seamless backgrounds. Mostly I did this to make them stand out from all of the other profiles on Petfinder at any given time but sometimes I would do it around a holiday (like green for St. Patrick's Day). In every case, using a colored background made the images less salable as stock photography.

• It interests me how these graffiti artists are able to keep such good separation between colors. In this image, I like the shapes but also have to wonder how long the painter had to wait between coats for the finished design.
M_Kloth-Urban_Abstract-2308.jpg
• I like the shapes and colors in this and the next image but I think they would be stronger with a more saturated blue.
M_Kloth-Urban_Abstract-2301.jpg
• I love the green and purple colors here. If this image makes the final cut, I'll likely crop it a touch so the purple ends in a point at the bottom left corner.
M_Kloth-Urban_Abstract-2331.jpg
• Okay, let's get this out of the way from the start - graffiti can be beautiful or it can be ugly but it is almost always a crime. People create graffiti for any of a number of reasons. My Urban Abstract series should not be considered as a support of property damage nor should it be considered my approval of any particular message. I create these images because it provides a framework for me to appreciate color, form, and texture. If the graffiti did not exist, I might instead do my own painting on various surfaces but somehow photographing the existing graffiti seems more authentic to me.
