• The Cable Bridge again - I wish I would have waited just a couple more minutes so that the nearly full moon would have been above the bridge instead of shot through the cables.

 • The Columbia River is really the lifeblood of the region and without it, I think few people would live in the area. I saw this beach scene one day as I was driving east of the Tri-Cities and liked the way that the sticks and debris progressed through the image from left to right. I also liked the fuzzy cloudy reflection on the water.

 • At the homeowner's suggestion, I then went to a third location. I mention that only because it emphasizes the point that sometimes two heads are better than one. This image was taken from a higher vantage point with a telephoto lens. I wouldn't have thought about the position without the suggestion but it is my favorite because it not only includes their decorations, but it also includes a view of Tucson at night in the background which provides a very nice backdrop to their home.

 • A slightly different angle from the previous photo. It's always a good idea to move around after taking the initial photo to see if there might be a better composition. I think the previous composition is a bit stronger than this one.

 • Photographed as we enjoyed the holiday displays in the Winterhaven neighborhood. I asked Robin to pose in front of the candy cane lights. This is the only image made with a hand held camera this week. I needed to increase the ISO setting to ISO 2000 and opened my aperture to f/3.2. This allowed me to have a 1/60 sec exposure which was fast enough to ensure a sharp exposure. I also used a small LED light panel to illuminate Robin otherwise she would have been too dark in the frame.

I like this one (of course!) because it is a picture of my sweetie but also because I like the repeating candy canes through the frame on a diagonal.

 • This photo (also at TMC) was taken with the tripod set low to the ground to emphasize the luminaries. I used a wide angle lens to emphasize the one point perspective (the path appears to narrow as it leads away from the camera). I like the composition and the lights on the bridge in the distance.

 • I gave you a sneak peek of this photo last week. Tucson Medical Center (TMC) goes all out with their holiday decorations. This photo was made using a long exposure (30 seconds) on a tripod. I stopped the lens down (small aperture) to f/14 so that the lights would have a star burst effect. I think that effect is nice for many night images but especially for holiday decorations.

 • The last few images show the decorations on the home of some friends. I used a tripod for each. Because there was a pretty big difference between the brightest and dimmest lights in the scene, I actually made several images of varying shutter speed lengths with the camera on a tripod. Two of those images were then combined in Photoshop so that the overall lighting in the composition was a bit more balanced.

 • After making the initial exposures, I moved to a new location and switched from a wide angle lens to a medium telephoto to give a second composition. Again, multiple exposures were combined for this final image.

 • This image was made behind the hospital. The white rope lighting that tops the fence around the community garden is a bit too bright in this image. It commands too much attention in the frame (the brightest object usually does) and it should not be the main focus of the image. This image was also made with the camera on a tripod (though about 5 feet off of the ground) with a relatively small aperture setting to give the star burst effect.

 • Infrared (IR) image - Eastern Washington high desert landscape. The wispy clouds against the black sky is set against the a scrub covered hill top. I like that the landscape here is pushed to the point of abstraction.

 • Infrared (IR) image - Eastern Washington high desert landscape. Sun flares are another technique I limit because they can feel gimmicky when over used.

 • I enjoyed the way that the clouds cast their shadows on the land further breaking up the landscape.

 • Infrared (IR) image - This photograph of a train was made outside of Connell, Washington. I was on my way home from photographing at Coyote Ridge Correctional Institution and took a little detour to make some infrared landscape images. The IR series from Washington and the earlier series from Kentucky were both made as I was preparing to move out of state. There is something about the IR imagery that seems almost dreamlike to me and I feel it is fitting that places I used to call home were captured using this technique.

 • Infrared (IR) image - I liked this stone bridge over the small creek. This image was made about six or seven miles from where I lived in Lexington, KY. I enjoyed that I could go from urban/suburban to completely rural landscape over the course of just a few miles. I also liked that the name of the road is Frogtown Road.

 • Infrared (IR) image - Eastern Washington high desert landscape. The clouds, black sky, and white desert scrub give this image an other worldly look.
