• While I would often bring entire litters to the studio (whether on location at the shelter or at home), I did not usually photograph them together because it made it more difficult to get individual portraits for their adoption profiles. Still, sometimes it was hard to resist putting them together to watch (and photograph) them playing.

  • This puppy did make it into Shelter Puppies but this wasn't the pose used. The pup was adopted by someone Robin worked with at the time.

  • This puppy made it in to the Shelter Puppies book. I love those ears!

  • This is one that I photographed at the animal control facility (as opposed to the humane society) in Washington. They didn't have an ideal spot for me to work and there was always a LOT of distraction for the animals making it more difficult to get them to look at the camera. Still, I like the profile.

  • This is one of the images I regret not having used a white background to capture. I love the way that the puppy's ears point in the same direction as his (or her) gaze. It probably would have been a Shelter Puppies image had it been on white.

  • From time to time I would photograph the adoptable animals on different colored seamless backgrounds. Mostly I did this to make them stand out from all of the other profiles on Petfinder at any given time but sometimes I would do it around a holiday (like green for St. Patrick's Day). In every case, using a colored background made the images less salable as stock photography.

  • Some puppies just look like troublemakers. This is one of them but of course I'm sure he was always perfectly behaved.

  • Puppy on blue.

  • This one dates back to my Kentucky years and was photographed at the Woodford Humane Society (well, I probably brought the puppy and his sibling home to make the photographs). A great example of puppy attitude.

  • This one is a surprise because the puppy was laying down and looking at the camera. Can you guess how often that's happened?

  • This one is all about the gesture and the ears for me. Another one I wish had been shot on white.

  • Ooh! Snuggle Puppy of mine,
Everything about you is especially fine.
I love what you are.
I love what you do.
Oooooh! I love you.
• I've always thought that this photo of this puppy looks like a photo of a stuffed toy. I love the tilt of her head, the texture of her fur, and the shine in her eyes.

  • Such a look from such a small puppy!
    M_Kloth_2537.jpg
  • I've photographed WAY TOO MANY adoptable animals over the years (nine and counting) to remember all of the animal's names. This one was Joey.

  • With the exception of Snickers, the dogs photographed on the white seamless were all considered for my Shelter Puppies book. Some of the images made it into the book and others are being licensed as stock photography.
    M_Kloth_0396.jpg
  • Again, Snickers is the only puppy in the gallery that wasn't photographed for an adoption profile because Snickers already had a family. Snickers is a labradoodle.

  • This week's throwback gallery features some of my earliest work with both my dogs and some adoptable and client animals. This cat was photographed while she was waiting for adoption at the Woodford Humane Society in Versailles, KY.

  • Starting off with an easy one. This image was created before I had any real studio lighting but despite that, was reasonably well lit. I included my girl Little Bit in the photo because let's face it, a dog will elevate just about any portrait. I was tilting my head mostly to be silly here. Robin was making noises to get Little bit to perk her ears and she was tilting her head left and right so naturally, I did the same. The opposite angles that we were tilting our heads actually works fairly well together.
