  • Infrared (IR) image - This photograph of a train was made outside of Connell, Washington. I was on my way home from photographing at Coyote Ridge Correctional Institution and took a little detour to make some infrared landscape images. The IR series from Washington and the earlier series from Kentucky were both made as I was preparing to move out of state. There is something about the IR imagery that seems almost dreamlike to me and I feel it is fitting that places I used to call home were captured using this technique.

  • Space Rover 1 explorer's log: Food! Lots of food! My mission is a complete success. I declare this planet habitable. I look forward to returning to my home land where it's not so hot, though. Spacedog Spiff, rover and out.

  • While I would often bring entire litters to the studio (whether on location at the shelter or at home), I did not usually photograph them together because it made it more difficult to get individual portraits for their adoption profiles. Still, sometimes it was hard to resist putting them together to watch (and photograph) them playing.

  • At the homeowner's suggestion, I then went to a third location. I mention that only because it emphasizes the point that sometimes two heads are better than one. This image was taken from a higher vantage point with a telephoto lens. I wouldn't have thought about the position without the suggestion but it is my favorite because it not only includes their decorations, but it also includes a view of Tucson at night in the background which provides a very nice backdrop to their home.

  • In Arizona, the renewable energy of choice is solar power (big surprise)but in eastern Washington, it's all about wind power and water power. This was taken at one of the wind farms we could see from our home.

  • The last few images show the decorations on the home of some friends. I used a tripod for each. Because there was a pretty big difference between the brightest and dimmest lights in the scene, I actually made several images of varying shutter speed lengths with the camera on a tripod. Two of those images were then combined in Photoshop so that the overall lighting in the composition was a bit more balanced.

  • The first six images were all photographed at home. This and the next image were made with that previous lesson in mind. The concept for these images was isolation. In this image I showed myself in the middle of an open field with no one in sight. It was created on a HOT day in the middle of the afternoon. I set up the photo before changing into the semi-formal clothes for the portrait.

  • Infrared (IR) image - This image was made on the Ashland Farm in Versalles, Kentucky. Horse racing in Central Kentucky is a billion dollar a year industry. The barns on a farm like Ashland are fancier than most peoples' homes. I was very fortunate to gain access and I regret that my skill level wasn't where it is now because I feel like I could have done so much more with that gift.
