  • Wheat field and wind farm. I like the way that the clouds hug the hill almost like the windmills were blowing the clouds down the hill.

  • Continuing with the theme of avoiding the camera for my self portrait, in this image I used motion blur to obscure my face. I showed myself doing schoolwork on the computer. I closed the blinds to make the primary light source the computer monitor and I framed myself against the brighter light coming from the hallway so that I wouldn't be completely lost in the frame. This portrait took some experimenting because the camera was on a tripod and I had to set the frame and exposure without being able to see how the composition would look in the view finder. Ultimately, I think the image is okay but it would have worked better had I used a shallow depth of field because the background is a distraction.

  • Wheat field in either Kennewick or Finley. It's hard to know where the lines are drawn out in these wide open spaces.

  • The blue sky and clouds over the wheat field are what makes this image in my opinion.

  • Part of the difficulty of a self portrait comes with not knowing what to depict. Photographing myself swinging a golf club was another crutch of sorts designed to take away a bit of the focus off of me as an individual and instead show me doing something. This is another image that would have worked better with a shallow depth of field.

  • Moving on to show a new level of crazy, in this next portrait series, I wanted to show more or less every day scenes with a twist. Here I am watching Good Eats munching on something decidedly not 'good eats'. I paused the show on the opening splash screen to emphasize it was a cooking show and I chose my Wag More/Bark Less shirt to show that I'm a bit of a crazy dog person. Diet Mountain Dew has long been my drink of choice and well, the snack food is that bit of unexpected. Like much of my early portraiture, this image would have benefited from using a shallower depth of field to blur the background.

  • The first six images were all photographed at home. This and the next image were made with that previous lesson in mind. The concept for these images was isolation. In this image I showed myself in the middle of an open field with no one in sight. It was created on a HOT day in the middle of the afternoon. I set up the photo before changing into the semi-formal clothes for the portrait.

  • Parts of Washington are included in what is known as the Palouse. The Palouse is an agricultural zone encompassing southeastern Washington, northeastern Oregon, and north central Idaho. One of the primary crops is wheat. The region has rolling hills and has a long enough growing season that you can often see fields in various stages of growth from plowed fields, to green wheat, to golden wheat ready to harvest. This road is mostly used to access these sprawling wheat fields.

  • The wind farms are very often in the middle of wheat farms. This is a good example of how the fields can be in various stages of growth.

  • I had planned to take some dusk images of our house for the real estate listing and realized that the quality of light was brilliant that evening so I quickly changed plans and photographed a nearby wheat farm.

  • Another photo at the wheat farm at dusk. Those colors seem almost too vibrant to be true but they are accurate as far as I remembered them.
